An original! Not like any hot sauce you have ever tasted! Cowgill's hot sauce is made with the Datil Pepper (pronounced dat'll as in "Dat'll do pig"). It has a sweet, smokey start with just the right amount of kick that does NOT overpower the taste of food but enhances it, like a great bottle of wine...and with four exciting, delicious flavors, you'll never have to reach for anything else. You'll throw out every bottle of "gimmicky" hot sauce you have because Cowgill's IS THE REAL DEAL!
The datil is an exceptionally hot pepper, a variety of the species Capsicum chinense. Datils are similar in strength to habaneros but have a sweeter, fruitier flavor. Their level of spiciness may vary from 100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville scale. Mature peppers are about 3.5 in long and yellow-orange in color. Datil peppers are cultivated throughout the United States and elsewhere, but the majority are produced in St. Augustine, Florida. Although local lore suggests datils were brought to St. Augustine by indentured workers from Minorca in the late 18th century, it is more likely they were brought from Chile around 1880 by a jelly maker named S. B. Valls. The pepper is almost identical to a west African pepper called the "fatalii" or "fatal." Datil peppers are used by the Minorcan community in many recipes. Many commercial manufacturers of datil pepper products are located in St. Augustine, which also has the annual Datil Pepper Festival.
Making traditions is what this family is all about. Brenda Mickler married "Big D" Danny Cowgill in 1972 and after taking over ownership of "The Palm Valley Fish Camp", a historic landmark, little did they know the tradition they'd started. Big D created a concoction to enhance the restaurant's cuisine and the rest is history. Big D knew he had created a masterpiece and so did everyone else! Family and customers alike wanted more of the "good stuff". Eventually Brenda and Danny were bottling more than they could handle. Today, Cowgill's is one of the most asked for hot sauces in Florida from The Beach Hut Cafe, Ellen's Kitchen, Lulu's, Cinotti's and after all these years, it's still #1 at The Palm Valley Fish Camp.
Brenda and Danny have 3 sons who started out in the kitchen of their restaurant back in high-school. Danny, Casey And Dustin served up "Big Bren Burgers" along with mason jars of their awesome Datil pepper sauce. Today, they have helped launch this local mom and pop operation into a growing sauce sensation. Danny Cowgill, West Coast VP of Operations, is married to wife Sara and is the father to son, Will. He spends countless hours as a football coach at Daphne High school. Casey, East Coast VP of Operations, is also a devoted family man. He is married to his high school sweetheart of 21 years, is father to son Jackson, twins Kannon and Kate and Pop Warner football coach for his son's team. Youngest son Dustin, is the Director of shipping for Cowgill's Hot Sauce. He is a loving father of sons Collin and Carson and daughters Lilianna and Makayla.
David is the California cousin and the actor of the family who is excited to be spreading the Cowgill’s sauce to the west coast! He is most well known for his 9 years as the "Orkin Man" in their TV commercials, 4 years as Cliff Wilson on "The Young & The Restless" and as the voice of Slammin' Sammy for 5 seasons on "Friday Night Lights". You can see all his credits at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0184748/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1. David lives in Los Angeles with his wife Jackie and their 2 children, Cooper and Makenna.
