COWGILL'S HOT SAUCE

4 EXCITING FLAVORS!

"THE ORIGINAL" DATIL PEPPER   AND NOW

HABAÑERO, DATIL MUSTARD & JALAPEÑO!

An original! Not like any hot sauce you have ever tasted! Cowgill's hot sauce is made with the Datil Pepper (pronounced dat'll as in "Dat'll do pig"). It has a sweet, smokey start with just the right amount of kick that does NOT overpower the taste of food but enhances it, like a great bottle of wine...and with four exciting, delicious flavors, you'll never have to reach for anything else. You'll throw out every bottle of "gimmicky" hot sauce you have because Cowgill's IS THE REAL DEAL!

ABOUT THE DATIL PEPPER

The datil is an exceptionally hot pepper, a variety of the species Capsicum chinense. Datils are similar in strength to habaneros but have a sweeter, fruitier flavor. Their level of spiciness may vary from 100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville scale. Mature peppers are about 3.5 in long and yellow-orange in color. Datil peppers are cultivated throughout the United States and elsewhere, but the majority are produced in St. Augustine, Florida. Although local lore suggests datils were brought to St. Augustine by indentured workers from Minorca in the late 18th century, it is more likely they were brought from Chile around 1880 by a jelly maker named S. B. Valls. The pepper is almost identical to a west African pepper called the "fatalii" or "fatal."  Datil peppers are used by the Minorcan community in many recipes. Many commercial manufacturers of datil pepper products are located in St. Augustine, which also has the annual Datil Pepper Festival.

Our Story

Our Story

Brenda & Danny Cowgill

Making traditions is what this family is all about. Brenda Mickler married "Big D" Danny Cowgill in 1972 and after taking over ownership of "The Palm Valley Fish Camp", a historic landmark, little did they know the tradition they'd started. Big D created a concoction to enhance the restaurant's cuisine and the rest is history. Big D knew he had created a masterpiece and so did everyone else! Family and customers alike wanted more of the "good stuff". Eventually Brenda and Danny were bottling more than they could handle. Today, Cowgill's is one of the most asked for hot sauces in Florida from The Beach Hut Cafe, Ellen's Kitchen, Lulu's, Cinotti's and after all these years, it's still #1 at The Palm Valley Fish Camp.

I’ve been using Cowgill’s hot sauce here at work each morning…at first I thought it was a little too hot…then I went back to the Cholula I usually use and it was SO weak…I’m now back to Cowgill’s and almost done with my bottle!
— GAREN V.
Tried the hot sauce tonight on a rather bland stew.... and whammy. My mouth was simultaneously hosting a polite foodie get together.
— HUGH W.
I found Cowgill’s to be tangy, hot & smoky with a touch of sweetness. Great on my morning eggs.
— PAUL F.
I am simply blown away by the taste! Even though the datil has a relatively high scoville it seems as though the heat stays at the front of the palate and doesn’t burn the back of your throat which is what I dislike with most hot sauces.
— JOHN P.
I really like it! Just the right balance of sweet and savory. I’m a person who can tolerate extremely spicy foods but I wouldn’t increase the heat on this...it’s perfect as is!
— LORI S.
Overall, it’s a hit. Great flavor. Very nice kick.
— SARAH L.
I’ve been using Cowgills a lot. It’s a unique heat that has a tang that works well! Yum!
— MITCH C.
This hot sauce was really great. The slight sweetness makes it really easy to eat with a back end burn. Good stuff!
